Block 2 Flashcards
1
Q
What are the stages in thrombopoiesis?
A
Megakaryoblast –> Promegakaryocyte –> megakaryocyte –> thrombocyte
2
Q
What are the stages in erythropoiesis?
A
Proerythroblast –> erythroblast –> reticulocyte –> erythrocyte
3
Q
What does erythrocyte maturation involve?
A
1) Decrease in cell size
2) Haemoglobin production
3) Loss of organelles (inc. nucleus)
4) Acquisition of biconcave shape
Controlled by erythropoietin (EPO) (from kidneys) and requires iron, folic acid and vitamin B12.
4
Q
What vitamins, minerals etc. are needed for erythropoiesis?
A
DNA synthesis requires:
- Folic acid B9
- Cobalamin B12 (intrinsic factor)
Haemoglobin synthesis requires:
- Vitamin B6
- Fe 2+
5
Q
How do you calculate MCV?
A
MCV = Hct/RBC
6
Q
How do you calculate MCHC?
A
MCHC = Hb/Hct
