Blast furnace Flashcards
What is ore?
A rock which contains a large amount of metal.
How is iron in the ore? Name of iron ore?
Iron is combined as an oxide in the HAEMATITE.
How is the oxygen removed?
Using carbon because its more reactive than iron T/F it steals the oxygen, leaving the iron.
What are the 3 raw materials that go into the blast furnace are…
Iron
Coke- contains carbon
Limestone- removes acidic impurities.
What is the process?
Coke is burned to very high temperatures, this is when is reacts with oxygen; C +O2===> CO2
Then the carbon dioxide reacts with more carbon to form carbon monoxide; C+CO2===>2CO
Carbon monoxide is the reducing agent (causes another substance to lose oxygen).
Fe2O3 + 3CO ===> 2Fe + 3CO2.
Equations in order.
C + O2 ===> CO2
C + CO2 ===> 2CO
Fe2O3 + 3CO ===> 2Fe +3CO2.
