Blandat Flashcards
The hard problem
The fact that we have no idea how any physical system could ever produce any subjective, qualitative experiences.
The explanatory gap
The explanation of consciousness is not going to happen in the same was as typical explanations of physical things. Is there ever gonna be a explanation plain enough for us to see?
Qualia
Definition of what experiences feel like and how they differ from each other.
Difficult to define, easy to give examples of.
Cannot be found in the physical world, only exists in phenomenal consciousness.
Global workspace theory
Shares the information in the spotlight of attention widely to many cognitive functions.
A network that allows output to interact with each other
Introspection
Reflective consciousness + Verbal reports.
Verbal report of particular contents of phenomenal consciousness.
Refrigerator light illusion
Illusion that the contents of consciousness is clear and vivid all over the perceptual field
Change blindness
Difficulty noticing changes ti scenes or objects when the exact location of the change is obscured.
The flicker task.
Inattentional blindness
The tendency to be unaware of stimuli that are currently unattended.
The blurry, less detailed periphery.
The unseen Gorilla.
Content
Patterns of qualia that appear in phenomenal consciousness. E.g form, shape, feel, color. Subdivisions: Quality Intensity Temporal duration Spatial location
State
Background condition that allows phenomenal consciousness, not itself something we experience.
E.g Sleep, Coma, drowsiness, Minimally conscious state etc.
