Bladder/Urethra Flashcards
What is the cloaca?
A common cavity where merging of the genitourinary and intestinal systems meet.
What is the cloaca derived from?
It is aka the distal hind gut, so it is endoderm
At around 7 weeks, what divides the cloaca and what are the two anterior/posterior structures created by this separation?
The urorectum septum divides the cloaca into an anterior urogenital sinus and posterior rectum.
What is the urogenital sinus derived from?
As the anterior cloaca, it is derived from endoderm
Describe the three parts of the urogenital sinus (upper, pelvic, and phallic)
Upper = bladder. Pelvis = prostatic urethra, entire female urethra. Phallic = genital tubercle, distal male urethra.
What is the structure where the mesonephric duct fuses to the urogenital sinus?
The verumontanum.
What parts of the bladder are derived from mesoderm?
The trigone and ureteric orifice (via the mesonephros -> ureteric bud)
The bladder is mostly derived from what?
Endoderm (as it is the upper anterior cloaca)
In females, the entire floor of the urethra is derived from ___.
Mesoderm (* random trivia fact)
The median umbilical ligament in the adult comes from what structures?
Allantois -> urachus -> median umbilical ligament
A persistent urachus puts the adult at risk of what?
Adenocarcinoma, seen at the dome of the bladder. It is one of the few indications for a partial cystectomy.
The urogenital sinus starts developing at the ___ week .
8th
The bladder develops between weeks ____ to ____.
9 to 12
