Fertility Awareness Method
AKA: Rhythm method, Based on abstaining from sex during times that conception takes place
Fertility Awareness Method Avoidable Times
Ovum is most likely to become fertilized with in 24 hours after ovulation, Sperm can survive up to 7 days, To avoid pregnancy the couple needs to avoid intercourse between days 8-19
What is the key to the Fertility Awareness Method?
Key to using this method is knowing when the woman ovulates
Fertility Awareness Method can be measured three ways
Count days (calendar method), Basal body temperature, Cervical mucus
Basal body temperature (Fertility Awareness Method)
Body temp rises @ ½ to 1 degree when a female ovulates, Temperature is recorded everyday on fertility tracking calendar; Must be tracked for at least a few months to ensure best time for conception/worst time for prevention
Cervical Mucus Method
Menstruation (Days 1-5), Dry Days (Days 6-9), Wet Days (Days 10-20), Wettest Days (Days 17), Dry Days (Days 21-30)
Spermicide
Sold at most drugstores, no prescription needed; Chemical that stop sperm from reaching the egg
Forms of Spermicide
Gels, Films, Foam Suppositories
How does Spermicide work?
Works by blocking sperm from entrance to cervix and stops sperm from moving well
How to use Spermicide
Insert into vagina before sex to prevent pregnancy; Can be used by itself or with other birth control (diaphragm, cervical cap, condoms); Some aren’t effective right away need at least 10-15 minutes before sex, many only effective for 1 hour if engaging in sex more than once need to add more
Spermicide Effectiveness
18 out of 100 who use become pregnant each year even if used correctly; Actual rate: 28 out of 100 people who use spermicide become pregnant each year
