Birds Flashcards
Identification and Surveying techniques
What is the purpose of “Year-Round Protected Nest Surveys”?
Where there is potential for a Schedule 1 Species of the Migratory Birds Regulations to occur or potential for nests protected under the BC Wildlife Act, targeted nest surveys should occur. The time of year of these surveys is irrelevant as the purpose is to identify and locate protected nest structures.
When should “General Bird Nest Surveys” occur?
These surveys should be conducted during appropriate seasonal timing window, depending on habitats present. Should occur no more than 48 hours prior to vegetation clearing.
What time of day should bird nest surveys be conducted?
Within the first 3-4 hours after sunrise.
When should bird nest surveys NOT be conducted?
- Inclement weather (e.g., heavy rain, light rain, or snow)
- Under windy conditions (e.g. >2 on the beaufort scale)
- When air temps are below certain thresholds. This is species dependent.
What is a good amount of time for survey effort?
Minimum 1 hour per hectare, this may be longer if search is in extremely complex habitat.
