housing - passerines
legally must be able to fully stretch wings and flap them
cages primarily used for confinement overnight or when unsupervised
ideally aviary for flight
provide enrichment but not at expense of space
wood perches
avoid plastic or covering with sandpaper = pressure sores
housing - pisittacines
legal - enough room to stretch and flap wings
cages should be square with horizontal bars
door large enough to accommodate parrot on habd
furniture and perches = non toxic, parrot proof, wood
parrot stands should not be used as permanent home
parrots husbandry considerations
position - at eye level in bust part of house
no draughts
warm = 25 degrees
leave a dim light on at night to allow parrot to see
humidity - regular spraying/baths
breeding
illegal to import wild caught parrots
should all be captive bred
in wild - females not lay unless they had:
suitable nesting site, a mate, correct environmental conditions
passerine nutrition
seed/grain eaters
supplemented with soft or egg food - provides extra vitamins/minerals/protein
grit
psittacines nutrition
fruits, nuts, berries, seeds, flowers and small mammals
dietary problems common;
selective eating, seed junkies, overeating due to boredom, malnutrition
water, supplements
