What is bipolar disorder?
Cycling between mania (7 days+) and depression (2 weeks)
What is the duration for hypomania?
Over 4 days
What are some symptoms of mania?
Speech changes, grandiosity, irritability and lack of inhibitions
What is the monitoring for lithium?
Monitor levels 1 week after a dose change, 12 hours post last dose and then weekly until levels stabilise
What is the therapeutic range of lithium?
0.5-1
What is the most common cause of lithium toxicity?
Dehydration secondary to gastroenteritis
Why should lithium not be given in the first trimester?
It is teratogenic and can cause ebsteins anomaly which is congenital malformation of the tricuspid valve
What is TOXICC in lithium toxicity?
Tremor
Oliguric renal failure
Ataxia
Including reflexes
Convulsions
Consciousness decreased
Coma
What can be used as a mood stabiliser?
Sodium valporate
