What are the characteristics of Bipolar Disorder?
characterized by mood swings from profound depression to extreme euphoria known as mania, with intervening periods of normalcy
Describe Bipolar I Disorder.
client is experiencing or has experienced a full syndrome of MANIC or mixed symptoms and may have also experienced depression
Describe Bipolar II Disorder.
characterized by bouts of major depression with episodic occurrence of HYPOMANIA but the client has never met criteria for a full manic episode
Describe Stage I of Bipolar Disorder.
hypomania with symptoms NOT sufficiently severe and caused marked impairment in social or occupational functions to to require hospitalization
Describe Stage II of Bipolar Disorder.
acute mania marked with impairment in functioning that usually requires hospitalization
MOOD: euphoria and elections where the person continues to experience a high
COGNITION/PERCEPTION: both become fragmented with accelerated thinking or racing thoughts; paranoid and grandiose hallucinations are common
ACTIVITY/BEHAVIOR: excessive psychomotor activity where the individual has little insight to the behavior; may go days without sleep and dress may be disorganized, flamboyant, or bizarre

What combination of medications is used to treat bipolar disorder?
Antipsychotic and anticonvulsant
What are major side effects from Lithium?
tremor, memory and concentration issues, sedation
what is the normal therapeutic range for lithium therapy?
0.6-1.2 for maintenance
1.0-1.5 for acute mania
Describe symptoms associated with lithium toxicity.
2.0 or higher: tremors, sedation, confusion
3.5 or higher: delirium seizures, coma, cardiovascular collaps, death
