acute mania marked with impairment in functioning that usually requires hospitalization
MOOD: euphoria and elections where the person continues to experience a high
COGNITION/PERCEPTION: both become fragmented with accelerated thinking or racing thoughts; paranoid and grandiose hallucinations are common
ACTIVITY/BEHAVIOR: excessive psychomotor activity where the individual has little insight to the behavior; may go days without sleep and dress may be disorganized, flamboyant, or bizarre
