what are side effects of benzodiazepines?
A
drowsiness, poor balance or coordination, slurred speech, confusion
*caution with suicidal and drug addictive patients and benzodiazepines cause dependence

describe the safety issues and nursing interventions for patients taking antianxiety agents.
A
- abrupt withdrawal can be life threatening
INTERVENTION: instruct medication adherence and never to abruptly stop taking medication; assess patient for tolerance - drowsiness, confusion and lethargy
INTERVENTION: instruct patient not to drive - symptoms of depression may be aggravated
INTERVENTIONS: assess patient mood and assess for suicidal risk - orthostatic hypotension
INTERVENTIONS: instruct slow movements from lying to standing position - effects of other CNS depressants are increased
INTERVENTION: instruct to not drink alcohol or take other CNS depressants - paradoxical excitement
INTERVETNIONS: hold medications and notify provider - blood dyscrasias: assess for sore throat, fever, bruising, or unusual bleeding; hold med and report if present
