Biospsychology: Endocrine System Flashcards
Endocrine System
Endocrine system works alongside the nervous system to control vital functions in the body. Acts much more slowly than nervous system but has a very widespread and powerful effect.
Glands and Hormones
Various glands in the body such as the THYROID glad produce hormones. Hormones are secreted into the bloodstream and affect Andy cell in the body that has a receptor for that particular hormone.
Most hormones affect cells in several organs or throughout the entire body, leading to many diverse and powerful responses. The main gland of the endocrine system is the pituitary gland located in the brain, often called the master gland because it controls the release of hormones from all the other endocrine glands in the body.
Flight or flight
STRESSFUL EVENT The ANS changes from normal state to sympathetic state. Adrenaline triggers physiological changes in the body(e.g. heart rate) which crests the physiological arousal necessary for flight or flight response. Flight or flight is the way an animal responds when stressed, the body becomes physiologically aroused in readiness to fight an aggressor or flee. Once the threat has passed the ANS works in the opposite to a parasympathetic state.
Sympathetic state
Increase heart rate, increase breathing rate, dilates pupils, inhibits digestion, inhibits saliva production and contacts rectum.
Parasympathetic state
Decreases heart rate, decreases breathing rate, constricts pupils, stimulates digestion and salivation, and relax rectum
