Biopsychology: The Nervous system Flashcards
Nervous system
Specialised network of cells in human body and is our primary internal communication with two main functions:
- Collect, Process and respond to information in the environment
- Co-ordinate the working of the different organs and cells in the body
Divided into two sub systems: CNS and PNS
(Central nervous system & Peripheral nervous system)
The central nervous system (CNS)
The CNS is made up of the brain and spinal cord. Passes information to and from the bras and connects nerves to the PNS
Brain: centre of all conscious awareness, the outer layer “the cerebral cortex” is highly developed in humans. The brain is divided into two hemispheres.
Spinal cord: extension on the brain, responsible for reflex actions such as pulling your hand away from a hot plate.
The peripheral nervous system (PNS) - ANS & SNS
Transmits messages via millions of neutrons to and from the CNS. Subdivided into:
Autonomic nervous system (ANS): governs vital functions in the body such as breathing and heart rate
Somatic nervous system(SNS): controls muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors
