biopyschology Flashcards
what is the central nervous system made up of ?
brain
spinal cord
outline the main functions of CNS
- control behaviour
- regulate the body’s physiological processes
what is the function of spinal cord ?
-relay infos between the brain and the rest of the body
- monitor and regulates bodily processes .e.g digestion , breathing ,reflexes
connected to different bodily parts by pairs of spinal nerves
-contain circuit of nerves cells
name 4 parts of main brain parts ?
Cerebrum
cerebellum
Diencephalon includes thalamus and hypothalmus
brain stem
how many parts are cerebrum split into ?
4 main parts
frontal lobes - thoughts and speech
Occiptal lobes -visula images
- Cerebral hemisphere - left hemispere lang speech
right hemisphere -visual motor
Perittal lobe - sensory touch , temp
what are the functions of endocrine system ?
- network of glands that manufacture and secrete chemical messengers -hormones
how does endocrine system deliver hormones
- uses blood vessesls
what hormone does adrenal gland produce
Adrenaline - fight /flight response
wha is the function of hypothalamus
- controls pituary gland
– releases hormone to activate the pituary gland
what are the changes that occur during sympathetic
- increased heart rate
- force of heart contraction
-pupils dilate
inihibted digestion
slows bodily proccesses.e.g urination
what happens during the parasympathetic
- slows heart rate
-decreases blood pressure - stimualtes digestion
pupils constricts - body relaxes
-decreases breathing rate
what is the function of Peripheral nervous system ?
to relay nerve impulses from the CNS to the rest of the body
what does PNS divide into
- somatic
Autonomic nervous sytem
what is the function of somatic nervous syatem -
– involved in Reflex action without involvement of CNS -protection from harm
made up of 12 pairs cranial nerves +31 pairs of spinal nerves
