Biopsychology - The Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
What is the nervous system & its main functions?
A
- specialised network of cells
- internal communication system
- collects, processes & responds to information
about the environment - coordinates functioning of different organs &
body cells
2
Q
What are the 2 main sub-systems of the nervous system?
A
- The Central Nervous System (CNS)
- The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
3
Q
What is the CNS & its functions?
A
- comprised of brain & spinal chord
- origin of complex demands & decisions
- passes messages to & from the brain (spine)
- connects nerves to the PNS
- coordinated life functions & bodily processes
(brain)
4
Q
What is the PNS & its functions?
A
- nerves outside of the brain & spinal chord
- transmits information to & from CNS
- has 2 divisions:
- Autonomic
- Somatic
5
Q
What is the role of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)?
A
- carries information to & from internal organs
- sustains involuntary life processes
(e. g. breathing) - divided into the:
Sympathetic NS
Parasympathetic NS
6
Q
What does the sympathetic nervous system do?
A
Generally increases bodily activities
7
Q
What does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
A
Conserves the body’s natural activity levels by maintaining or decreasing it.
8
Q
What is the role of the Somatic Nervous System?
A
- Transmits information to & from senses
(e. g. visual from eyes) - directs muscles to react & move
