Biopsychology - The nervous system Flashcards
What does the Central Nervous system consist of?
The brain and the spinal cord
What does the Peripheral nervous system do?
Sends information to the CNS from the outside world, and transmits messages from the CNS to muscles and glands
What does the Somatic nervous system do?
Transmits information from the receptor cells in the sense organs to the CNS
What does the Autonomic nervous system do?
Transmits information to and from internal bodily organs. Has two main divisions which are the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems
What are the 2 main functions of the nervous system?
- To collect, process and respond to information in the environment
- To coordinate the working of different organs and cells in the body
What are the 2 sub-systems that the nervous system is divided into?
- Central nervous system
- Peripheral nervous system
What does the spinal cord do?
- Passes messages to and from the brain and connects nervous to the PNS
- Also responsible for reflex actions
What functions does the Autonomic nervous system govern?
- Breathing
- Heart rate
- Digestion
What does the Somatic nervous system govern?
Muscle movements
What is the outer layer of the brain called?
The cerebral cortex
Which nervous system controls the body’s response to threats?
Sympathetic nervous system
What body functions does the Parasympathetic nervous system regulate?
“Rest and digest”
“Feed and breed”
Which system controls voluntary actions?
Somatic nervous system
What is the Peripheral nervous system made up of?
Millions of nerve cells
