Biopsychology - Endocrine system Flashcards
What does the Endocrine system do?
Works alongside the nervous system to control vital functions in the body
What happens when the Endocrine system instructs glands to release hormones?
The hormones are released into the bloodstream and carried to specific organs
Where is the pituitary gland located?
The brain
What does the pituitary gland do?
Controls the release of hormones from all the glands
What hormone does the thyroid gland produce?
Thyroxine
What does thyroxine do?
- Increases the heart rate
- Increases metabolic rate
What does the adrenal gland produce and where is it produced?
Adrenaline in the adrenal medulla
What does adrenaline do?
It triggers increased heart rate and contracting blood vessels
What hormone do the ovaries secrete?
Oestrogen
What hormone do the testes secrete?
Testosterone
How do the endocrine and autonomic nervous systems work together during a stressful event? (5 points)
- Stressor causes ANS to change from Parasympathetic to Sympathetic
- Pituitary gland releases ACTH
- Adrenaline is released
- Physiological changes occur like increased heart rate
- One threat has passed, the Parasympathetic NS returns
What changes take place in the Sympathetic state? (Name 3)
- Increased heart rate
- Increased breathing rate
- Inhibits digestion
What changes take place in the Parasympathetic state? (Name 3)
- Decreased heart rate
- Decreased breathing rate
- Stimulates digestion
