Biopsychology: Localisation of function of the brain Flashcards
Define localisation
the idea that different areas of the brain are responsible for different functions
Outline structure of the brain:
- split into two hemispheres
- outer layer = cerebral cortex 3mm thick
- Each hemisphere split into 4:
1. Frontal lobe
2. Parietal lobe
3. Temporal lobe
4. Occipital lobe
There are four areas we must be familiar with:
1. motor
2. somatosensory
3. visual
4. auditory
Motor area:
responsible for movement
located in frontal lobe
Somatosensory:
responsible for sensory info
located in parietal lobe
Visual:
Responsible for visual info
located in occipital lobe
Auditory:
Responsible for analysis of speech/ hearing
located in temporal lobe
The two language areas are called
- brocas area
- wernickes area
Outline Brocas area
found in left frontal love
responsible for speech production
damage to this area leads to Broca’s aphasia
slow and lack of fluency in speech
Outline Wernickes area
found in left temporal lobe
responsible for language comprehension (understanding)
damage results in wernicke aphasia
could speak but produced nonsense words
