Biopsychology - divisions of central nervous system Flashcards
What is meant by the nervous system?
Consists of central nervous system (CNS) & peripheral nervous system (PNS)
What is meant by the central nervous system (CNS)?
Brain & spinal cord
Origin of all complex demands and decisions
What is meant by the peripheral nervous system (PNS)?
- Sends info to central nervous system (CNS) from the outside world
- Transmits messages from the CNS to muscles & glands in the body
What are the 2 main functions of the nervous system?
- Collect, process & respond to information in the environment
- Coordinator the working of organ & cells in the body
What are the sub-systems of the nervous system?
- Central nervous system
2. Peripheral nervous system
Central nervous system is made up of which 2 part of the body?
- Brain
2. Spinal cord
The brain is the center of what?
Conscious awareness
The brain’s outer layer is called?
Cerebral cortex
How many hemisphere is the brain divided into?
2
The spinal cord is responsible for what?
Reflex actions
What does the peripheral nervous system do?
Transmits messages via millions of neurons (nerve cells)
What is the role of the autonomic nervous system?
- Controls functions in the body such as breathing & heart rate.
- Transmits info to and from internal bodily organs.
What 2 areas are the peripheral nervous system is sub-divided into?
- Autonomic nervous system
2. Somatic nervous system
Is the autonomic nervous system involuntary or voluntary?
Involuntary
What are the 2 main division of the autonomic nervous system?
- Sympathetic
2. Parasympathetic systems
