Biopsychology Flashcards
What are the two divisions of the nervous system?
- Central Nervous System
- Peripheral Nervous System
What is biopsychology?
The biological basis of our behaviour.
What is the role of the CNS?
It’s used to make decisions
- everything is sent to the brain, besides instantaneous actions
What is the role of the peripheral nervous system?
Brings information from our senses and transmits that to the CNS.
The CNS then transmits this response to muscles or glands via the PNS
What are the two divisions of the Peripheral Nervous System?
- Somatic Nervous System
- Autonomic Nervous System
What type of neurones does the somatic nervous system consist of?
- Sensory
- Motor
What is the somatic nervous system?
The part of the PNS that “talks” to the external world
What is the autonomic nervous system spilt into?
- Sympathetic Nervous System
- Parasympathetic Nervous System
What is the role of the Sympathetic Nervous System?
It gets us ready for emergencies and is involved in the fight or flight response.
What is the role of the Parasympathetic Nervous System?
It restores natural order after the fight or flight response has taken place.
- sometimes known as ‘rest and digest’
What does the autonomic nervous system control?
- Involuntary responses and actions
- controls glands and smooth muscles
