Biopsychology Flashcards
Name of procedure where two hemispheres are separated + effects
cerebral commissurotomy - information processed by one hemisphere cannot be relayed to the other
Area of brain surgically lesioned in cerebral commissurotomy
corpus callosum
Research done into split brains was done by who
Sperry (1968)
how many patients were studied by Sperry
11 patients who had had a cerebral commissurotomy prior to research
what does PNS stand for
peripheral nervous system
what does the peripheral nervous system do and what is it?
part of nervous system that lies outside of the brain + spinal cord.
what are the two components of the PNS
automatic nervous system and somatic nervous system
what does the ANS stand for and do
automatic nervous system, controls involuntary vital functions like breathing rate and heart rate
what does the SNS stand for and do
somatic nervous system, receives information from sensory receptors and results in effectors being stimulated by CNS via motor neurones
what is the ANS further divided into
sympathetic and parasympathetic branches
what do the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches do
work as an antagonistic pair - sympathetic increase heart rate, breathing rate, vasoconstriction and pupil dilation while parasympathetic does opposite
what responses do sympathetic and parasympathetic produce?
sympathetic produces fight or flight (increases physiological arousal) while parasympathetic produces rest and digest
what is the chemical messenger system of the body
the endocrine system
what are the processes behind the endocrine system
hormones are secreted into the bloodstream from glands, then transported to target cells in the blood with complementary receptors
what is the main/’master’ gland in the body, and why
the pituary gland, as it controls the release or hormones from all other glands in the body
