Central nervous system (CNS)
Consists of the brain and spinal cord and is the origin of all complex demands and decisions
Peripheral nervous system (PNS)
System used by the CNS to transmit messages to neurons
Autonomic nervous system (ANS)
Part of the peripheral nervous system
Works automatically without our control and is responsible for digestion, heart rate, sexual arousal etc
Parasympathetic nervous system
Part of the autonomic nervous system
Responsible for ‘rest and digest’
Sympathetic nervous system
Part of the autonomic nervous system
Responsible for the fight or flight response
Somatic nervous system (SNS)
Part of the peripheral nervous system
Controls muscle movement and receives input from sensory receptors
