Biopsych: Parts of the brain Flashcards
Frontal lobe
Contains the motor area and Broca’s area
Motor area
In both hemispheres, controls voluntary movement on opposite sides of the brain
Damage may result in loss of control over fine movements
Broca’s area
Responsible for speech production
Damage causes Broca’s aphasia, characterised by slow, laborious speech and speech lacking in fluency
Parietal lobe
Contains the somatosensory area
Somatosensory area
Sensory information from the skin is represented
Occipital lobe
Contains the visual area
Visual area
Each eye sends information from the right visual field to the left visual cortex and vice versa
Damage to the left hemisphere, for example, can cause blindness in part of the right eye
Temporal lobe
Contains the auditory area and Wernicke’s area
Auditory area
Responsible for analysis of speech-based information
Wernicke’s area
Responsible for language comprehension
Damage can result in Wernicke’s aphasia, which often makes patients produce nonsense words (neologisms) as part of the content of their speech
