•is dx when pt experiences BOTH mania & depression nearly every day for 1 week!*
Mixed episode
think of Wednesday Adams(always sad, down, debbie downer)
• CHRONIC, persistent mood disturbance characterized by symptoms such as insomnia, LOSS
of appetite, DECREASED energy, LOW self esteem, difficulty concentrating, sadness,
hopelessness
Dysthymic disorder
MILD mood swings b/w hypomania & depression WITHOUT loss of social/occupational function
Cyclothymic disorder
specific & has to do with change of the season & has 2 subtypes
• Winter depression/fall onset SAD- when the days are longer & darker pts have propensity
towards depression
• S&S- INCREASE sleep/appetite/CHO, weight GAIN, irritability, heavy extremities
• Spring onset SAD- LESS common
• S&S- insomnia, weight LOSS, POOR appetite

Seasonal affective disorder-
pts have manic episodes w/ a mix of depression (sometimes)
• They are elated, euphoric, hyperactive/religious
