Biomonitoring and Human Health Flashcards
Means of evaluating exposure?
- Air sampling
- Skin sampling
- Surface sampling
- Biologic monitoring - measures inside body
What is biological monitoring and what does it measure?
The measurement of a chemical or its metabolite in a body fluid; is a measure of absorbed dose or dose that permiated the body
Role of biological monitoring?
Bridge the gap between IH measurements and a medical surveillance program
Lauwerys’ Triangle?
- External exposure
- Internal Dose
- Adverse Effect
Types of biological monitoring?
- Biomarkers of Susceptibility
- Biomarkers of Exposure
- Biomarkers of Effect
Biomarkers of Exposure?
This measurement of a substance in a body fluid is a measure of exposure and NOT a health effect (e.g. lead in blood)
Biomarkers of Susceptibility?
Genetic or acquired differences in our ability to respond to exposures.
Biomarkers of Effect?
Something that is measured in a body fluid that is associated with a known health impairment (e.g. protect against NOT measure)
Where can I get specific information on what biomarkers will be useful and how to interpret the results?
National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH)
Guidelines for biological monitoring?
BEIs (Biological Exposure Indices)
- practical guidance on sample collection, methods of analysis, and interpretation
