Biomolecule Basics Flashcards
Proteins
Provide structural support and act as catalysts that facilitate chemical reactions
Nucleic Acids
Encode and transmit genetic information
Carbohydrates
Provide source of energy and make up the cell wall in bacteria, plants, and algae
Lipids
Make up cell membranes. store energy, and act as signaling molecules
Polymers
Molecules made up of repeated monomers, connected by covalent bonds
Match the polymers to their monomers
Proteins - Amino Acids
Nucleic Acids - Nucleotides
Carbohydrates - Simple sugars (glucose, fructose, etc.)
Lipids - Fatty Acids bonded to other organic molecules
Dehydration Synthesis (Condensation Reaction)
Removes a water molecule, forming a new bond. When the water molecule is released, a polymer is built
Hydrolysis Reaction
Adds a water molecule, breaking a bond. When the water molecule is added, a polymer is broken down
