Biomes π² Flashcards
What is biological diversity?
Biodiversity is all the different kinds of life youβll find in one area
How do living things pass their characteristics on to future generations and why is this important?
Genetic information is passed from generation to generation. This is done through asexual or sexual reproduction. It is important to keep species living.
What are biomes?
A biome is an area that different species may inhabit
Explain the difference between budding and binary fusion.
With budding, a parent cell creates an outgrowth that eventually becomes a daughter cell.
With binary fission, a parent cell reproduces by splitting in half.
Name one type of organism that reproduces sexually and asexually.
Sea turtles are an example of an animal that reproduces sexually, (green algae) is an example of an organism that reproduces asexually.
Some starfish, plants, sea anemones and other aquatic-like creatures reproduce both ways.
In what way is DNA a code?
It contains the instructions for making a living thing. It is important for the production of proteins in the cell. πͺπ½π±
The total code for human DNA is called the human __________?
Genome.
What is a Genome?
The complete set of DNA π§¬in an organism. The genome contains all of the information needed for a person to develop and grow.
An organism has how many pairs of chromosomes?
Five
How many chromosomes are in each sperm cell?
23
Why do the body cells of all organisms that reproduce sexually have even numbers of chromosomes?
So when they split, each parent can give an equal amount. Plus they can have a backup.
What is the main value of variation?
Adaptation, Everything is different.
AE
What is Natural Selection?
Organisms that are more adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and pass on the genes. Overtime these organisms change and adapt.
What is artificial selection?
Artificial selection is when the human selection of breeding pairs to produce favourable offspring.
Biomes can be described as ________?
Diversity of life on Earth
