Biology vocab t5 Flashcards
passive transport
a membrane transport that does not require energy to move substances
diffusion
movement of molecules from high to low concentration. no energy needed
facilitated diffusion
movement of specific molecules across cell membranes through protein channels
atp
source of energy for storage use at the cellular level
osmosis
Movement of water towards to more concentrated compartment
isotonic
an environment that has the same concentration of solutes as the cell, resulting in no net movement of water
hypertonic
an environment that has a higher concentration of solutes compared to the cell, causing water to move OUT of the cell, resulting in shrinkage
hypotonic
an environment that has a lower concentration of solutes compared to the cell, causing water to move INTO the cell, resulting in cell swelling or bursting/growing
osmotic pressure
the pressure required to stop the flow of solvent molecules from a region of lower concentration through a semipermeable membrane
active transport
movement of molecules from low to high concentration that requires energy
endocytosis
cellular process by which a cell takes in materials from its external environment, bringing it into the cell and forming a vacuole
exocytosis
cellular process by moving large molecules out of the cell to the cell exterior
lipid bi-layer
a thin membrane made of two layers of lipid molecules. The molecules form a continuous barrier around all cells.
cyclosis
the circulation of cytoplasm within the cell
equilibrium
a state where all forces in the body are balanced and equal to the opposite force
