bio vocab t6 Flashcards
Asexual reproduction
reproduction where offspring is produced by a single parent cell. They are genetically IDENTICAL
Sexual reproduction
reproduction where offspring is formed by the combination of genetic info from 2 parent cells.
chromosomes
thread-like structures that are located in the nucleus. Passed on from parents to offspring. they carry genetic info
mitosis
cell division that results in two identical daughter cells with the same chromosome # as the parent cell
cytokenesis
division of cytoplasm into two daughter cells after the nucleus’s division
cancer
uncontrolled cell growth and division. Often form tumors
centromere
the region where the chromatids are joined.
telophase
the final phase of cell division, where the chromatids or chromosomes move to opposite ends of the cell and two nuclei are formed.
centriole
a cylindrical organelle near the nucleus in animal cells, involved in the development of cell division.
binary fission
a type of asexual reproduction typically observed in prokaryotes (bacteria), there is a separation of the parent cell into two new daughter cells.
budding
a type of asexual reproduction in which a new organism develops from an outgrowth due to cell division at one particular site.
DNA
genetic material containing instructions for cell functions. double helix structure
RNA
Molecule involved in protein synthesis, translating genetic info
nucleic acids
They are organic molecules that contain CHON+P and are base molecules of DNA & RNA
gametes
reproductive cells with half the chromosome number
