Biology Topic 9 Flashcards
Biodiversity
The variety of all living things. It includes the different animals, plants, fungi, protists and microbes, the genetic information they carry and the ecosystem that they form.
Species Diversity
The variety of different organisms living in a particular region
Genetic Diversity
The variety of genes or number of inheritable traits within a species
Purpose for Identification
Safety, quarantine, medicine, conservation, forensics, agriculture
Principles of Classification
External characteristics, mode of reproduction, internal anatomy, physiology, biochemical data
Taxonomist
A biologist who specializes in the study of classification of living things
Species
Members of a group of similar organisms that are capable of interbreeding under natural conditions to produce viable fertile offspring
DNA Barcodes
The barcode is a particular sequence of bases present in DNA. It is using DNA technology as a new and fast way of identifying new species.
Extinction
The end of an organism or a taxon
Primitive Characteristics
Features that were present in a common ancestor and so appear in all members of the group
Derived Characteristics
Advanced or modified features that evolved later and appear in some members only of the group
Kingdom Monera Characteristics
Prokaryotic, unicellular, autotrophic (photosynthesis and chemosynthesis) and hetrotrophic, binary fission, cilia/flagella
Kingdom Protista Characteristics
Eukaryotic, unicellular and multicellular, autotrophic (photosynthesis) and hetrotrophic, mitosis and meiosis
Kingdom Fungi Characteristics
Eukaryotic, unicellular and multicellular, hetrotrophic, mitosis and meiosis
Kingdom Plantae Characteristics
Eukaryotic, multicellular, autotrophic (photosynthesis), mitosis and meiosis
