Biology Topic 15 Flashcards
Carrier
A heterozygote that has the allele for a recessive trait but does not show the trait
Monogenetic Traits
Variation that occurs due to the action of different alleles of a single gene
Polygenetic Traits
Variation that is caused by the action of two or more genes at different loci
Epigenetics
All changes to genes, apart from changes to base sequences, which bring about phenotypic changes
Natural Selection
Variation in characteristics within a species
Differential survival- a selective pressure kills off those without the necessary characteristic
Genetic Inheritance- the new individuals have a selective advantage and reproducing, passing the new characteristic to all future generations
With time the frequency of these individuals increases resulting in a change of population over time
Genotype
The double set of genetic instructions in a diploid organism and the genetic makeup of an organism at one particular locus.
Phenotype
Expression of an organism’s genotype in its structural, physiological and biochemical characteristics
