Biology Topic 7 Flashcards
Energy Budgets
Although organisms have similar types of energy demands, what differs?
The relative amounts they spend on each part of their life-history.
What are the factors that energy budgets depend on?
Size, environment, thermoregulation, etc.
Do bigger or smaller animals demand more energy total?
Bigger
Do bigger or smaller animals demand more energy per unit body mass?
Smaller
How does body size infuence energy demand?
Impacts the way they move, frequency of eating, and what they eat.
What is scaling?
How size/mass affects anatomy, physiology, and biological processes of an organism
As an organism scales up, what happens to the ratios?
Surface area increases but volume increases at a larger rate
Do bigger or smaller animals have a smaller (surface area/volume) ratio?
Bigger
True or False: Surface area scales with mass
True
Why does the line on a logarithmic graph comparing mass to surface area different to the data points collected?
Animals have appendages, which tend to differ amongst the individual organisms.
What is the relationship between an organism and its mass/volume?
An organism needs to obtain resources and excrete waste to supprt teir mass/volume.
What is the relationship between an organism and its surface area?
Organisms need to exchange matter and generate energy across their membrane
What are the disadvatages for large organisms?
Reduced efficiency. Diffusion distance, specialized systems
What are the advantages for large organism?
