Biology: Tissue Fluid Flashcards
What is tissue fluid formed by?
blood plasma carrying dissolved substances leaked from the capillaries
What does tissue fluid do?
-surrounds cells in tissue -provides oxygen and nutrients
How does tissue fluid move?
-mass flow -movement of fluids down pressure gradient -net outflow of plasma from arterial
-caused by high blood pressure/high hydrostatic pressure
Where does excess tissue drain to?
vessels of lymphatic system
What is lymph?
colourless/pale/yellow fluid containing lipids
Outline the movement of lymph
passes through lymphatic system, drains into blood via vena cave
What main component is found within lymph, why is this important?
-lymphocytes -type of white blood cell which helps filter foreign material
Outline process by which tissue fluid is formed
-arterioles, high hydrostatic pressure than fluid, high hydrostatic pressure than osmotic
-differences forces fluid with small molecules out of blood through pores in capillary
-RBCs, platelets and plasma proteins too large
-diffusion, facilitated and active transport occur between cells and tissue fluid, less in fluid
-reduces hydrostatic pressure, blood pressure at venous lower
-water leaves, plasma proteins lower water potential
-water potential lower than tissue fluid, osmotic pressure higher than hydrostatic
-water moves by osmosis into capillaries
-excess tissue fluid not reabsorbed is introduced to lymphatic system
