Biology - The Skeleton and Movement Flashcards
How is protection one of the functions of the skeleton and give an example
The skeleton protects organs. For example, the skull protects the soft material of the brain, The backbone protects the spinal chord, The ribs protect the heart and lungs
How is movement a function of the skeleton?
The skeleton allows movement.
Where does movement occur?
At the joints
How does the skeleton support the body?
The bones of the skeleton keep the body upright and give it shape. Without the skeleton, our bodies would collapse like a tent without tent poles
How do bone disorders occur?
Lack of calcium
What are rickets?
Rickets is a softening of the bones in children due to deficiency or impairs metabolism of Vitamin D, Magnesium or calcium.
What is cartilage and synovial fluid?
It prevents friction between the bones rubbing off each other
What is a ligament?
Ligaments connect bone to bone
What are tendons?
Tendons connect muscle to bone
What are antagonistic pairs of muscles and give an example
Two muscles which carry out opposite effects eg, Biceps and Triceps
What happens when you raise the upper arm?
Biceps contract, get shorter and Triceps relax, get longer
What happens when you lower the lower arm?
Biceps relax and triceps contract
What is a joint?
A joint is where two or more bones meet
What are the main types of joints?
Fixed joints, Ball and socket joints and Hinge joints
What is a fixed joint and where can you find it?
It’s a joint that does not move and it is found in the skull
