Biology Test Flashcards
Name 3 features of a plant cell
(Valid answers) mitochondria, nucleus, large vacuole, chloroplast, cytosol, cell membrane, cell wall
Name 3 features of an animal cell
(Valid answers) small vacuole, mitochondria, cell membrane, nucleus, cytosol, centrioles
Order these from smallest to largest : organs, organ systems, cells, tissues
Cells, tissues, organs, organ systems
What is the function of a cell wall?
To protect the cells’ organelles, controls what comes in and out of the cell, acts as the main protection barrier
What is the function of cell membrane?
Protects the cell, regulates molecules entering and leaving the cell
What is the purpose of cytoplasm?
Help hold the cells organelles in place
What is the function of nuclear membrane?
Surrounds the nucleus with a double membrane containing multiple pores
What is the role of mitochondria?
Convert oxygen and nutrients into energy
What does the vacuole do?
Stores waste products and maintains the PH level of the cell
What is the purpose of chloroplasts?
To convert sunlight into energy by a process called photosynthesis
What do red blood cells do?
Carry oxygen throughout the body and remove carbon dioxide, which it takes to your lungs for you to breathe
Function of nerve cells
Transmit electrical impulses from the brain to the rest of the body and are connected by sensory neurons
Function of a muscle cell
Contain protein filaments of action and myosin that slide, producing force and motion
What is the function of a male reproductive cell?
To produce, maintain and transport sperm and protective fluid
Name 3 specialised cells
Red blood cell, nerve cell, muscle cell, male reproductive cell, root hair cell, photosynthetic cell
Why is the pulmonary artery special?
It’s the only artery that doesn’t carry oxygen
Why is the pulmonary vein special?
It’s the only vein with oxygen
Which direction do veins travel?
To the heart
Which direction do arteries travel?
Away from the heart
What do capillaries do?
Exchange with the cells and take the carbon dioxide from the cells and give them oxygen
What is the function of the dual-circulatory system?
Body -> heart -> lungs
Lungs -> heart -> body
Why is it called the dual-circulatory system?
Because two things happen at once, blood flows into the heart, while the blood before is pumped out
What is the aorta?
The main artery
How many chambers of the heart are there?
4
