Biology Survival Key Words Flashcards
Individual
A single organism
Extinct
Population no longer exists
Ecosystem
A community of organisms along with all the abiotic factors
Population
All the organisms of the same species in a habitat
Community
All the organisms of different
species living in a habitat
Biotic
Living factors that affect an ecosystem
Abiotic
Non-living factors that affect an
ecosystem
Habitat
The place where organisms live
Sampling
A technique used to estimate the number or distribution of organisms/species in an
ecosystem
Quadrat
A square frame that is placed on the ground and used to count the number of organisms/species
Belt Transect
Tape measure placed on the ground, allowing organisms/species to be
counted at regular intervals
Systematic Sampling
Allows us to see how the distribution of a species changes as the habitat changes
Independent Variable
The thing you change in an experiment
Dependent Variable
The thing you measure in an experiment
Control Variables
The things that must be kept the same in an experiment
Producers
Organisms that make their own food
Consumers
Organisms that cannot make their own food and so have to gain nutrition from other
organisms
Biomass
What makes up living things
Endothermic
A reaction that takes in energy
Competition
Where an organism is trying to be more successful than another so that it can survive to reproduce
Interdependence
The dependence of two or more living things on each other
Mutualistic
A relationship that is beneficial to both organism
Parasitic
A relationship that is only beneficial to one of the organisms
Biodiversity
A measure of how many different species live in an ecosystem
