Biology-Skeleton Flashcards
What does the skeleton do?
Support,protects helps with muscle attachment
What does it protect?
The heart, lungs, spinal cord and the brain
What are bones are out of??
Flexible fibres and hard minerals
Hinge joint
Can move back an forth
Eg. Knee and elbow
Ball and socket joint
Can move all around
Eg. Ankle,shoulder
What do ligaments do?
Holds bone together
Is able to withstand sudden stress during movement of joint
Cartilage
Cushions and protects ends of bones reduces friction/shock absorber
Ligaments
Holds bones together able to withstand sudden stress during movement of joint
Synovial membrane
Produces synovial fluid
How are muscles attached to bone?
With tendons
Why are tendons inelastic?
So that the force can be transferred to the bone
Synovial joints are?
Ball and socket joints and hinge joints
How is movement brought about
Muscle contraction
Why do we need opposing muscle at a joint?
Cuz muscles can’t contract by themselves they need to other one to pull on them
What are te triceps and biceps?
Antagonistic muscles
