Biology part 2 Systems Flashcards
Reasons why organisms may be prevented from producing fertile offsprings
geographic isolation, temporal isolation (mating in different seasons), genetic incompatibility
Polymorphism
a gene that has multiple alleles, corresponding to distinct forms of a phenotype
Provides raw materials for speciation
Gene pool
the total of all alleles in a population
Evolution
a change in a population’s gene pool
Even if the ratio of a phenotype changes temporarily, as long as the ratio of the alleles remains the same, the population has not evolved.
If the ratio does change, or if a new allele is formed by a mutation, evolution has occurred
Evolution can sometimes result in speciation, the formation of a new species.
Mechanisms that contribute to speciation
