biology (Organisation) Flashcards
whats a tissue
a tissue is a group of cells with a similar structure and function
whats an organ
an organ is a group of tissues working together for a specific function
e.g the stomach
organs are grouped into what
ORGAN SYSTEMS which work together to form organisms
what happens in the mouth
food is chewed and enzymes in the saliva begin to digest the starch into smaller sugar molecules
what happens in the stomach
in the stomach enzymes begin the digestion of proteins.
the stomach contains hydrochloric acid which helps with the digestion of proteins
what comes to the small intestine
the fluid from the stomach which used to be food
what does the pancreas do
the pancreas releases enzymes which continue the digestion of starch and protein. they also start the digestion of lipids
what does the liver do
the liver releases bile which helps to speed up the digestion of lipids
bile also neutralises the acid released from the stomach
what happens in the large intestine
the fluid makes its way to the large intestine where water is absorbed into the blood stream
then released as feasces through the anus
what happens in the digestive system (Summarised)
in the digestive system large food molecules are digested into smaller food molecules and then the products of digestion are absorbed into the bloodstream
