Biology- Indicator Species Flashcards
Living organisms can be used as….
indicators of environmental change.
Air pollution (sulphur dioxide) can be indicated by counting….
the number of different lichen species and their abundances.
Non-living indicators:
environmental changes can be measured using non-living indicators such as oxygen levels, rainfall and temperature.
Advantages and Disadvantages:
cost of equipment, battery failure, human error, visit the site twice, interfered with by passers by, living indicators tell you about the viability of life, non-living indicators only tell you about one factor, living indicators are influenced by many other factors and their population size.
Validity:
a measurement is valid if it is measuring what it is supposed to be measuring
Repeatability:
The precision obtained when results are produced by one group, using the same equipment, in the same place on the same day
Reproducibility:
The precision obtained when results are produced by different groups, in different places, using different equipment or different times.
Precision:
The closeness of results to each other
Accuracy:
The closeness of the measured value to the true value
