biology-enzymes Flashcards
What are enzymes
Biological catalyst
Chemical reactions controlled by
Protein called enzymes
What is a catalyst
Chemical which speeds up a reaction without using up itself in the reaction
Why are enzymes needed?
Without enzymes the reaction inside cell will be to slow to allow life to go on
What is the molecule that react on the enzyme called?
Substrate
What is the place that the substrates react called?
Active site
What is the name of how enzymes work?
Lock and key model
What does high temperature give the enzyme and the substrate?
More energy so they will move faster and will collide more often which means that reaction take place more frequently
What does enzymes do if the temperature is too high?
Denatures
What is the optimum temperature?
The temperature that will the most suitable for the enzyme
What happens to the enzymes in the condition which is higher than their optimum pH
Denatured
What is the optimum temperature and pH for most of the enzymes?
37c
7pH
What is the optimum for pepsin ?
2pH
