What is a habitat?
A place where organisms live in
What is an environment?
the factors that affect an organism’s chances of survival over its lifetime
What are the two main components of an ecosystem?
- survival factors
- living and non-living things
What is an abiotic factor?
are non-living, physical factors
examples:
- air quality
- humidity
- sunlight
- rainfall
- wind
- tides
- waves
- lightening
- fires
What is a biotic factor?
living factors and also dead organisms and their wastes
examples:
- predators
- parasites
- fungi
- infectious bacteria + viruses
- rotting leaves
- faeces
- urine
What is competition between organisms?
when two or more organisms try to obtain the same resource which may only exist in limited amounts
What is mutualism?
a relationship where two organisms live closely together and both benefit
What is Parasitism?
a relationship where one organism benefits from the relationship but the other one is harmed
What is commensalism?
a relationship in which one organism benefits and the other isn’t affected
