Biology Deck 6 - competition Flashcards
niche
the set of conditions and resources that a species requires in order to survive and reproduce
habitat
area with resources required by a species (cannot change suddenly)
limiting factor
resources are environmental conditions that limit the growth, abundance of distribution of an organism or a population in an ecosystem
competitive exclusion
two species with similar niches, coexist in the same ecosystem, then one will be excluded from the community due to intense competition, remaining population will be at a lower level with competition
intraspecific competition
between members of the same species
interspecific competition
between members in differing species
inerference competition
direct interactions between competitors
exploitative
one organism consumers a resource needed by another
resource partitioning
use limited resources different ways
competitive release
1 competing species disappears, leaving resources to the other
character displacement
physiological different among similar species whose distributions overlap geographically
dominance hierarchies
in intraspective completion aggression / completion is reduced by dominance hierarchies
keystone species
species in which another species in an ecosystem largely depend, if removed the ecosystem would change
primary succession
community colonizes rock
secondary succession
community colonizes previoiusly distrubed ground (field)
