Biology - classification Flashcards
State the characteristics of living things
Movement
Respiration
sensitivity
growth
reproduction
excretion
nutrition
Define the term species
a group of organisms that reproduce to form fertile offspring
What is the binomial system of naming a species
The first part of the name is the genus, the second part is the species e.g homo(genus) sapien(species)
How are living organisms classified?
shared features or structures based on evolutionary relationships
What are the Four eukaryotic kingdoms and a feature?
- Animals (animalia) - heterotrophic
- plants (plantae) - photosynthesis
- Fungi (fungi) - decomposers
- protoctista ( protista) - diverse nutrition
What is a dichotomous keys?
A way of identifying an organism by giving you two descriptions at a time and asking you to choose between them ( dichotomous means branching)
what are the main 2 phyla animals can be classified into?
veterbrates, and arthopods
What are the main classes of veterbrates?
fish, amphibian, reptile, bird, mammel
What is a veterbrate?
Are animals that have a backbone
What is a arthropod?
are animals with jointed legs but not backbone
What are the main classes of arthropod?
Insects, Crustaceans, Arachnids,
myriapods
what are the main 2 phyla plants can be classified into?
Flowering plants (angiosperms), Ferns
What can flowering plants be divided into?
monocots and dicots.
What is the main difference between monocots and dicots?
monocots have one cotyledon (seed leaf) and in multiples of 3, while dicots have two cotyledons and in multiples of 5.
What is the difference between between a flowering plant and a fern?
Flowering plants reproduce with seeds and flowers, while ferns reproduce with spores.
What is the order of life?
don’t kiwi play cricket on flat green surfaces - Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species
What does the order demonstrate?
Number of individuals getting smaller, largest to smallest (the top is the most)
What does morphology mean?
overall size, shape, and structure of organism
What does anatomy mean?
detailed body structure
What does DNA mean?
looks at similarities and differences in DNA sequences between organisms
Name the five kingdoms of life
animals, plants, fungi, protoctists, bacteria
What does eukaryotic and prokaryotic mean?
Eukaryotic - have a nucleus in the cell
Prokaryotic - don’t have nucleus
What major group is not put in the kingdom?
Viruses
What kingdoms are eukaryotic and prokaryotic?
Eukaryotic - plants, animals, fungi, and protoctists
Prokaryotic - bacteria
How do animals, fungi and plants store their carbohydrate?
plants - starch
fungi, animals - glycogen
What are viruses surrounded in?
a protein coat
What is classification based on?
studies of morphology and anatomy
What is used the most to classify organisms?
DNA sequences are used most to classify organisms accurately
What are the 3 domains and what do you put in the test?
bacteria, archea, put eukarya
