Biology Chapter 1 Flashcards
Organism
Any living thing
Nucleus
Controls the cell and is needed to make new cells
Cytoplasm
This is the part of the cell where all the chemical reactions take place
Cells membrane
A barrier around the cell also it controls what comes in and out of the cell
Mitochondria
It is where respiration happens in a cell
MRSGREN
An anagram to remember the characteristics of living things
Magnification
It is where something gets bigger so you can see in more detail
Resolution
It is how much you can see under a microscope
Cell wall
Strengthens the cell
Vacuole
Its keeps the cell firm
Chloroplast
It is where photosynthesis happens in a cell
Microscope
An item designed to look at something up close and in more detail
Specimen
The specimen is something you observe under a microscope
Slide
A glass object that goes under a microscope it holds the specimen on it whilst you look at it through the microscope
Cell
Through millions of them cells make up an organism
Unicellular organisms
An organism that can survive itself, it is only made of one cell
Specialised cells
Cells that are specialised for different functions
Nerve Cell adaptation
Nerve cells carry electrical impulses around the body. This makes them able to transmit messages around your body
Egg Cell adaptation
The egg cell is covered in a jelly-like substance that attracts sperm cells
Sperm Cell adaptation
The sperm cells have a streamlined head and a long tail, the tail swims because it has lots of mitochondria that transfers energy.
Diffusion
It is a movement of particles between low and high density places
Rate of diffusion
How fast the particles go from a low density place to a high density place
Root hair cell adaptation
Root hair cells absorb water and nutrients from the soil. The root hair creates a large surface area for absorbing water and nutrients.
Red blood cells adaptation
Red blood cells also remove carbon dioxide from your body, transporting it to the lungs for you to exhale.
