Biology Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is an observation?
Gathering information about events or processes in a careful and organized way.
What is the goal of science?
To understand and investigate the natural world, explain events in the natural world, and to use these explanations to make useful predictions.
What is information gathered from an observation?
Data.
What is the difference between quantitative and qualitative data?
Quantitaive- deals with numbers, easily measurable
What is an inference?
A logical interpretation.
What is a hypothesis?
A proposed explanation for a set of observations.
True or false: Scientists need to be willing to change their minds about new ideas and theories that arise.
True
What is the idea that life can arise from nonliving matter called?
Spontaneous generation.
What did Francesco Redi hypothesize?
Flies produce maggots that appear on rotting meat.
What are variables in an experiment?
The thing that is changed throughout experiments.
How many variables are changed during a controlled experiment?
1
What is the difference between a manipulated and a responding variable?
Manipulated- constantly changed
Responding- the outcome of the manipulated variable
What did Anton van Leeuwenhoek discover?
Particles were floating around in open water.
How did Pasteur prove once and for all that spontaneous generation is nonexistent?
He allowed air to pass through and around rotting meat, but did not allow any bacteria. No living organisms formed until bacteria and other organisms were able to make contact with it.
What is a theory?
A well-supported hypothesis.
