biology chap 1 Flashcards
what is socio-biology
it is the study of the social behavior and the communal life of humans.
veterinary science
deals with the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of animals other than man.
bioclimatology
deals with the effect of physical environment on living organisms over an extended period of time
marine biology
study of living organisms in the sea or ocean deals with life in sea and the physical and chemical characteristics of the sea acting as factors for the marine life.
freshwater bio
deals with the study of organisms living in freshwater bodies. and the physical and chemical parameters of these freshwater bodies as well.
Define the scientific method.
The scientific method is a systematic process involving observation, hypothesis formation, experimentation, data collection, and conclusion.
eg of micro-molecules
(have low molecular mass) Amino acids, Water, Minerals and Sugars. Glycogen, Amino acids, Minerals and Nucleotides. Water, Minerals, Nucleic acids, Amino acids and Nucleotides, CO2.
eg of macro-molecules
(have high molecular mass) carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and proteins.
which molecules are acid soluble and which are not.
micromolecules are acid soluble and macro are acid insoluble.
division of micro-molecules
they are: 1. organic (glucose, animo acids, fatty acid, glycerol, nucleotides..)
2. inorganic (water, CO2..)
define organ
various tissues with related functions, assemble together in a structure to carry out their functions with great efficiency, these structures are known as organs.
biome
large regional community that is determines by the climate.
What is a hypothesis?
A hypothesis is a tentative explanation for observations that can be tested through experiments.
List the characteristics of life.
Cellular organization, metabolism, homeostasis, growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli.
What is the biosphere?
The biosphere is the global ecosystem that encompasses all life on Earth.
How does the scientific method ensure reliability in biological studies?
It ensures objectivity by using controlled experiments and repeatable results.
deductive reasoning
use if—then and is general to specific
inductive reasoning
use if —then and is specific to general
ways of forming a hypothesis
- deductive and inductive reasonings.
- intuition and imagination
- esthetic preference
- religious and philosophical ideas
- comparison and analogy with other processes
- finding something while looking for another thing.
define cloning
cloning is producing identical species by asexual reproduction using the tissue culture technique. cloning is a technique used to obtain Eugenic AIMS.
bioremediation
is the removal or degradation of environmental pollutants or toxic materials from the environment using biological organisms. For E.g. algae reduces the amount of heavy metals in water by bio absorption.
