Biology CH: 13 Diffusion and Osmosis Flashcards
What is selectively permeable membrane?
A selective permeable membrane allows some but not all molecules to pass through
what is Diffusion?
1) Diffusion is the spreading out of molecules from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration
Ex: * CO2 diffusing into a leaf, Oxygen diffusing out of a leaf.
* Oxygen diffusing from the blood into a cell and CO2 diffusing out of a cell.
2) Diffusion is caused by the kinetic energy of the molecules.
3) Diffusion is said to be passive
What is Osmosis?
1) Osmosis is the movement is water molecules across a semi-permeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration.
2) Osmosis is said to be passive
What is a Solvent?
Is a liquid that dissolves other substances
Ex: Water is a biological solvent
What is a solute?
Is a substance that has been dissolved
Ex: Salt
What is a solute?
Is a substance that has been dissolved
Ex: Salt
What is a solution?
Is a mixture of a solute and solvent
Ex: salt and water
