Biology- B5 Flashcards
1
Q
A stem cell is an unspecialised cell that can become any type of cell in the right conditions
A
The two type of stem cells are adult and embryonic cells
2
Q
Adult stem cell
A
- Used to cure disease e.g. Sickle cell anaemia
- in bone marrow
3
Q
Embryonic stem cells
A
- can be extracted from human embryos which then could be made to differentitiate into specific cells to replace faulty cells
- can help treat things like leaukiemia
4
Q
Cloning can be used to make stem cells
A
- genetic material is removed from an egg cell
- a nucleus from a body cell of the adult your cloning is then instered in the egg cell
- under the right conditions, inactive genes in the nucleus of the body cell can be reactivated so that an embryo forms
- embryonic stem cells can then be extracted from the embryo, they can then be controlled to form any type of specialised cell
5
Q
Mitiosis
A
-occurs in all body cells
- has 1 division
- creates 2 daughter cells
Has 46 number of chromosomes
-produces body cells
- used for growth and repair
