Biology Flashcards
Dear king Philip cried out for soup
Domain, Kingdom, phylum, class, order, genus, species
Allele
A copy of a gene
Polymorphism
A gene with multiple alleles
Genetic drift
When an allele is lost due to death of all members having that allele
Differential reproduction
Living beyond reproduction in order to give offspring a better chance to reproduce
Viral particle
A mature virus living outside a host cell
Lyric infection
A virus infects a host cell takes control of cells machinery and starts making copies of itself from proteins
lysogenic infection
A virus that incorporates into a host cells genome and new viruses are made through DNA replication
Reverse transcriptase role
Single stranded rna is able to be transcribe into dna
Chemotaxis
Bacterial movement toward something necessary for survival
Conjugation
Transfer of a plasmid from one bacterium to another, typically mediated by a sex pious from one bacterium
Smooth ER
Smooth er has a function in lipid metabolism. They have no ribosomes and are tubular vs flat like rough er. It helps oxidizes foreign substances, detoxifies drugs and pollutants
Mitochondria
The powerhouse of the cell, where ATP production takes place
Microtubules
Provide a platform for transport within cells
Microtubule organizing center MTOC
The - end of the microtubules attaches to MTOC and grows away from the + end
Dynein
Connects the outer part of the microtubule to its neighbor. The cross bridges slide along creating a whip action
Microfilaments (actin filaments)
React with myosin to create muscle contraction and responsible for cleavage during cytokinesis
Intermediate filaments
Provide mostly structural rigidity to a cell. Keratin is a type of intermediate filament found in hair and skin cells
Passive diffusion
Small non-charged molecules can pass though easily. Additionally water can too
Osmotic pressure
Pulling is the pressure generated by a concentration gradient.
Colligative property
A property based on the number of particles present rather than the type of particle
