Anatomy Flashcards
What is the hindbrain responsible for and name it’s constituent parts?
Balance, motor coordination, breathing, general arousal. Includes cerebellum, medulla oblongata, pons, reticular formation.
What are the parts of the midbrain and what is the function of the midbrain?
The midbrain is composed of the tectum, cerebral aqueduct, cerebral peduncles, tegmentum. The midbrain serves motor movement, especially movement of the eyes, and auditory and visual processing. It contains a large number of dopamine producing neurons. Degeneration in this area is associated with Parkinson’s.
What is the function and structure of the forebrain?
The forebrain contains the telencephalon (cerebral hemispheres), diencephalon (thalamus, hypothalamus, epithalamus, and subthalamus). It plays an important role in processing information related to complex cognitive activities, sensory and associative function and voluntary movement.
